Weekly update: 2 glossy markets ripe for the picking, and more

Well, last week I was too busy pitching to blog, so now I’m back…with a vengeance.

Writer’s Guidelines: I search for them so you don’t have to

  • I fired a pitch off to Endless Vacation magazine, which is a travel mag sent to RCI (timeshare) members. But you don’t have to be writing about timeshare destinations to consider pitching: the mag’s angle is essentially “well, people who own timeshares like to travel, so let’s give them information on all sorts of travel stuff.” WM says the sections they take freelance for are: “Weekender (on domestic weekend vacation travel); Healthy Traveler; Cruise Currents; Family Vacationing; Value Travel Destinations, up to 1,200 words. Also Taste (on food-related travel topics) and news items for Ready, Set, Go column on products and the useful and unique in travel, 100-200 words. Pays $100-900.” (I have a good feeling about this one..)
  • ReadyMade‘s San Fran office is being shuttered so the mag can move to parent company Meredith Publications’ Des Moines headquarters. None of the editorial staff decided to move with the magazine. (Hint, hint)[Source]
  • Backpacker Magazine primarily covers hiking. When warranted, we cover canoeing, kayaking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and other human-powered modes of travel. We pay $.60 to more than $1.00 per word, depending upon the complexity and demands of the article, as well as the proven experience of the writer. [Guidelines]
  • Running Times is the authoritative voice for the dedicated runner. For more than 30 years, our edit has explored training from the perspective of top athletes, coaches and scientists, presented insights into the lives and training of elite runners, and provided stories and commentary reflecting the dedicated runner’s worldview. Our audience is knowledgeable about the sport and actively participates in running and racing. All content is backed by, or written by, experts who have proven themselves in the specific field of distance running. [Guidelines]
  • Are you an enthusiastic resident with extensive knowledge of a particular city? Do you write with clarity and accuracy? If so, you might be just the right person to be an Insiders’ Guide author. [Guidelines]

That’s all for this week. See you next Tuesday!
