Paying Markets, Leads, and Info for freelance writers for Tuesday, Jan 13

This is the first in a weekly list of leads and information that I’ve found during my quest to pitch one new market a week. This week I’m pitching a market that I can’t talk too much about, but in the weeks to come, if I pitch a magazine I think y’all will be interested in, I’ll make a mention of that as well. Now, onto the markets!

  • First off, DC writers: On Tap magazine is a free monthly entertainment magazine published in the DC area. Their official writers’ guidelines can be found here.
On Tap doesn’t pay much ($.05 cents a word) so it’s not something for very established writers to investigate, but for those looking to break into food, drink, or restaurant scene writing it may be worth a shot. The magazine is very nightlife-focused with a few articles about travel, personalities, etc. each month as well. But with a name like “On Tap” you should expect the food and drink features to get a lot of play.
  • Writer’s Market reports that “New York Look,” a special biannual publication of New York magazine, is on hiatus.
  • In the “LOL” department, from JournalismJobs.com:

News editor wanted for nonprofit local news startup

    Requirements:

    • At least 10 years experience writing and/or editing real-time news stories on a daily basis on the Web, in print or for broadcast media.

    • An encyclopedic knowledge of San Francisco, including politics, culture, housing, health care, labor, education, neighborhoods and environmental and social issues.

    • Ability to thrive while working unsupervised and to meet deadlines without fail.
    • Demonstrated leadership skills that inspire writers, other editors, photographers, designers and other community volunteers to exceed their own expectations.
    • Superb skills in writing smartly and editing flawlessly in AP style. (We’ll look at your clips if you’re under consideration, and you’ll be tested on your abilities.)
    • A demonstrated ability to work fast and accurately while juggling multiple stories.
    • Ability to work with word processing programs on PCs and Macs. Some experience with blogging, HTML, Drupal, Photoshop, audio editing, multimedia tools and social-networking sites is a big plus.
    • Enthusiastic references from former newsroom superiors who were wowed by your talent, attitude, teamwork and creativity.

    Compensation: $15/hour.

Um, I may be biased because I’m a journalist with a job, not yet reduced to gnawing my desk for sustenance, but I really wouldn’t apply for this one. 10 years of experience has to buy more than $15 per hour, right?

  • Here’s a bizarre one from Funds For Writers (if you’re not subscribed, you should be; there’s a free and a for-pay version):
“Parabola is a quarterly journal devoted to the exploration of the quest for meaning as it is expressed in the world’s myths, symbols, and religious traditions, with particular emphasis on the relationship between this store of wisdom and our modern life. Article payment generally ranges from $150 to $400. The payment for epicycles and book reviews is $75.” No, I don’t know what an “epicycle” is–Wikipedia has it as an astronomy term.

The table of contents for the most recent issue starts like this:

    • A GUERRILLA GUIDE TO THE POPOL VUH Sarah Jane Sloane
An ancient myth lights the path to justice
    • THE OPPOSITE OF INJUSTICE is Compassion Charlotte Joko Beck
Healing advice from a modern Zen master

    • DOING JUSTICE TO LIFE
A conversation with Death Row inmate Damien Echols

    • BREAKFAST WITH HENRY FORD James Opie
The legendary tycoon learns a lesson about fair play

Very strange and interesting stuff. More info here.

  • This just in: PLENTY magazine folds. I liked this little rag.

That’s it for this week. Good luck!
