All the world may be a stage, but these kids aren’t merely players.

There was acting, yes, but also the trying on of costumes, running amok in the theater, attending workshops and, at one point, drumming on the floor to illustrate Shakespearean meter.

It’s all part of the free ShakeXperience program, a new three-week “summer camp” at Gannon University that combined acting workshops with rehearsals of “Two Gentlemen of Verona.” The workshops end today, but the play continues through Saturday as part of Gannon’s Shakespeare Summer Nights festival.

And don’t worry, there are no men in tights here — the play’s been reimagined to take place in the 1950s, a suggestion from two of the students.

Organized by theater professors and Gannon graduates, ShakeXperience was conceived as a “page to stage” idea, looking at Shakespeare as a playwright, not as just a great wordsmith.

“I don’t mean to sound too noble, but it’s our passion,” Shawn Clerkin, Gannon theater director, said. “We’re committed to the notion of theater having the ability to change lives.”

The 12 wedding cakes Kevin Horton created this week are the most he has ever done solo.

Once he decorated 14 cakes in a day, but that wasn’t when he had to do the baking and washing up by himself.

“I have to do what I have to do,” said Horton, owner of Kevin’s Kakes. “I’m under that kind of schedule.”

It’s a lot, but today is the busiest wedding day of the year. Experts estimate that 38,000 to 70,000 couples nationwide will tie the knot today, on the “lucky sevens” — July 7, 2007, or 7/7/07. Typically, 12,000 weddings take place on a July Saturday, according to TheKnot.com, a popular wedding planning site. Chalk up this date’s popularity to superstition, religious beliefs or convenience: The date also is a summer Saturday following on the heels of a major holiday.

Their cupboards went bare then, but not this year.

Members of Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, masterminds behind the Greek Festival in Erie, are so committed to hospitality that when they ran out of food in 1989, the first year, they went home and made more.

After attendance at the first festival exceeded all expectations, “everybody had to go home and clean out their freezers and bake new pastries, ” said Tom Parthenakis, the co-grand chairman of the church’s 2007 festival, or panegyri.

Panegyri (“festival” in Greek; pronounced paw-nee-yee-ree), a summer tradition in Erie, draws people from around the region and from as far away as California. It starts today.

Assumption Greek Orthodox Church started the panegyri as a fundraiser for the building’s upkeep 19 years ago. It’s a small parish, with only 80 families. But somehow that’s all it takes to host a party that draws more than 30,000 people.

This year, they’re prepared.

The spirited 18-year-old was unsure how to pronounce “Henri Cartier-Bresson, ” one of the fathers of modern photography, but she knew she liked his work.

And the work of her parents, Barb and Mike Priestap, of Photogenesis Photography on West 26th Street.

And the work of photojournalists, including the Erie Times-News’ Janet B. Campbell.

With inspiration like this, Sarah Priestap can hardly be anything but successful. She already has multiple awards to her name and a spot at the Erie Art Museum’s 84th Annual Spring Show, which ended Sunday. She will study photography this fall as a member of the Rochester Institute of Technology’s class of 2011.

Then one day, when she was in class, Reichert’s mother-in-law fell and dislocated her hip.

“My husband had the baby (Ryan), and he was supposed to pick Casey (their 10-year-old son) up from school,” said Reichert, 30, of Millcreek.
But instead, Reichert’s husband, Tom, had to take his mother to the hospital, leaving Casey without a ride.

When she got home at 3 p.m., she found her mother waiting to tell her that Casey needed to be picked up in 10 minutes. Reichert rushed to Our Lady of Peace School.

When she arrived, her son wasn’t there.
